OpenDurham.org is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of our community. Run by our parent nonprofit, Preservation Durham, the site requires routine maintenance and upgrades. This passive solar 'Harkrader House' was built by New Morning Construction. There are few windows on the east, west and north sides of the house, and numerous windows on the south side of the house, to let in light and warmth in the winter when the sun is low in the sky. The home has a solar hot water heater on the roof.
