Washington Duke and Sons was founded in 1871 when the elder Duke moved to Durham with his sons James and Ben, joining his son Brodie.
By 1884, the company had built a large Italianate Brick Factory.
Washington Duke died in 1905. James B. Duke became the head of the company, which, with additional acquisitions, became the American Tobacco Company.
