(Below in italics is from the 2004 East Durham National Register listing; not verified for accuracy by this author.)

Howard Newcomb House. 1-story side-gable bungalow with weatherboard, 12-over-1 sash windows, eave brackets, exposed rafter tails, and a full gabled Craftsman porch with a brick balustrade. This now operates as Freeland's Day Care. 1930-1940 CDs: Howard A. Newcomb owner/occupant (pres. Durham Fumiture Co.). 1937 SM.

C Garage. Ca. 1930. Front-gable weatherboarded garage.

Howard Newcomb, the original owner, was president of Durham Furniture Company. Unlike Penny Furniture, Holland Furniture Co and Kimbrell's who all sold new retail furniture,  the Durham Furniture Company sold antique furniture and reproductions. Here is an ad from the 1943 CD:

I can only imagine the kind of customers he had in the 1930s and 1940s in Durham. The amount of money needed to afford "The Mark of Gracious Living" as the ad states would've put Newcomb in the company of the Who's Who of Durham.    Unless I'm wrong (which is entirely possibly) this building is not home to a daycare center anymore, as the 2004 NR states.
