South Buchanan Boulevard

Running from West Main Street south to Yancey Street, South Buchanan Boulevard was originally named Milton Avenue; not until the 1960s was the Buchanan Boulevard name extended southward from West Main Street, creating a South Buchanan Boulevard (as well as a North.)

There are a number of Buchanans around from whom the name could derive; James Buchanan Duke is the most likely, though unconfirmed.

The northern part of the street, from West Chapel Hill, is dominated by commercial, industrial, and institutional uses. South of West Chapel Hill, the street is residential, and somewhat the fuzzy western border of the West End neighborhood (with Morehead Hill.)
