Founded in 1893 by Richard W. Sears and Alvah C. Roebuck, Sears, Roebuck and Company (Sears) originally offered catalog-style retail, focusing on mail-order products. By the end of the 19th century, the category had grown to include anything between groceries, automobiles, and houses. In 1925, the company began to build stores, and its massive success led to Sears department stores across the country. Despite having been the largest retailer in the United States, Sears began its decline in 2010, losing billions before its bankruptcy in 2018. As of 2025, only 5 stores remain.
