Brick pyramidal cottage with 3 chinmeys, random conmon bond brick walls, segmental-arched openings, a glazed front door, and tall 9/1 sash windows with slate sills. The engaged wraparound porch has plain brick posts. The rear ell has a recessed side porch. Myrick had the house built with brick salvaged from a tobacco warehouse in 1916. In 1930 Myrick was a salesman with Hessee Fumiture Co. His daughter, Frances Myrick Howard, owned and occupied the house until the late 1990s. [1921, 1930 CD; interview; Durham Co. DB 49, 445]

My grandfather built this house and I lived there from birth through college (1948-1970).  I am very proud and pleased with the job that the new owners have done with the rennovation and rehab of the home.  Most impressive.  Thanks.

The family story was that the brick came from a tobacco warehouse.  However, the worst fire in the history of Durham was recorded on March 23, 1914. The fire destroyed a large portion of the downtown.  I wonder if the brick came from downtown buildings that were demolished after the 1914 fire.
