Built in 1957, the Morehead School between Cobb, Arnette, Shepherd, and Lakewood replaced the earlier Morehead School on Jackson Street - site of the first purpose-built city graded school. The former school was demolished in the 1960s as part of urban renewal.

The Morehead Montessori community really enjoyed seeing these photos. In case you're looking to add a present day shot, the school received a big addition two years ago (and now has much better landscaping than it did at its inception). Thanks for posting these, Gary!

Yes, Morehead Montessori has definitely improved. My son was able (through the DPS "lottery") to opt into a combined Preschool-Kindergarten there as part of one of the first Montessori magnet classes, in the mid-1990s. I must confess that we don't remember that year fondly. The elementary school regimentation worked at odds with both the young age of the kids in that class and the Montessori philosophy, and the principal was not at all supportive. And not only was there no real landscaping, but the playground equipment was condemned and torn down within the first few weeks of school -- and much to our shock, Durham Public Schools said that our small children would have to do without any play equipment, since they had no money! Worse yet, when we tried to work with the PTA to raise money, we discovered that parents were apathetic, with few active, few attending and fewer still willing or able (the surrounding district was not wealthy by any means) to donate any money for See more...

Worse yet, when we tried to work with the PTA to raise money, we discovered that parents were apathetic, with few active, few attending and fewer still willing or able (the surrounding district was not wealthy by any means) to donate any money for their children's playground. Neither could we find any outside donor. After a year of this, we left for a private kindergarten.
I hear that things have been much better since that principal left, and that parents today are far more involved. And there are better facilities and landscaping!

I love this picture! I live on the corner behind the school, in fact, the roof visible on the right side of the picture is my house which I bought in 1992. For some reason, I'm fascinated by a picture of my house that's older than I am! And, for the record, I'm the second owner of this 71 year old house which was previously the home of Walter and Mary Gresham. Walter ran Watts Grocery for many years. Thanks for sharing, Gary, all your hardwork does not go unappreciated.
