From "Durham and Her People," 1951:

THE FORKS RESTAURANT, corner of Holloway STreet and Raleigh Road, was established in 1938. It was operated by Reuben Smith, who became owner in 1943. Mr. Smith was born in Wake County August 23, 1905, the son of the late Henry L. and Bettie O'Neal Smith. He attended the county schools of Wake County and then worked with his father, a Raleigh cafe operator, where he remained until he was married. September 13, 1927, he married Miss Alice Harding of Wake County. They have one child, Miss Iris. The family resides at 514 Park Avenue.

The Forks Restaurant specializes in pit cooked barbecue, brunswick stew, fried chicken, and steaks, with curb service.

In addition to owning the Forks restaurant, Mr. Smith also owns and operates Smith's Lake, an excellent fishing preserve. A large banquet hall is maintained on the premises where barbecue, brunswick stew, and fried chicken meals are served. Both The Forks Restaurant and Smith's Lake cater to banquets and parties. Mr. Smith is a member of the Moose Lodge and Ruritan Club. The Smith Family are members of the Baptist Church.
